What you get at The Spotted Dog, Penshurst, is a lovely old rambling 16th century white clapboard building (which started life as several cottages), panelling, low beams and four open fires. It is warm and welcoming in winter but equally enticing in summer, being positioned in beautiful countryside with tiered beer gardens at the front and back. Although the Spotted Dog has a restaurant, it maintains  the ambience of an old English pub.

Now under new ownership (2010), Cheryl and Jaqui are preserving the old world charm and as befits this environment, are serving traditional English food such as steak and kidney pie and roasts, with specials of game and duck. However, a new French chef is starting, so a continental twist might appear!

All fish, fruit, vegetables and dairy food is bought locally along with free range eggs, although some vegetables are grown in the pub garden along with fresh herbs.

The wine list has completely changed and there is now a good range of New World wines, with the guest wines being bought for quality, not price. With eight years of catering experience in France, Cheryl and Jaqui know a thing or two about wine. As always, favourite local ales such as Larkins and Harveys are sold.

Locals and visitors alike are welcome and feel relaxed here. Walkers, dogs and children are welcome with walkers being asked to remove their boots only if they dine in the carpeted restaurant. A private room can be made available for small functions.

It is advisable to book, especially for weekends, and all email bookings will be confirmed..
