According to local tradition the older part of the Wheatsheaf was formerly a hunting lodge owned by Henry V. The structure of the timbers and the wonderful crown post revealed during renovations in 1996 certainly indicates the building dates from the latter part of the 14 th century. The first mention of a tavern was in the 18 th century then more than a century later it became a smithy before converting once more to a licensed house in 1865, but until 1963 it was only licensed to sell beer.

The building has a brick structure supported by a wooden frame consisting of the original timbers, and it is notable for its prominent gables and large Tudor chimneys.

Inside an exposed section of the original wattle and daub (mud and straw) wall above a fireplace bears the date 1607.

It is stuffed full of interesting artefacts and has a very comfortable and welcoming physical atmosphere which is matched by the warm welcome given to patrons by the owners Liz and David, and their staff.

The bar is open 11am – 11pm (Sunday 12noon – 10.30pm) and food is available 12noon to 10pm.
